Table of Contents

The Chinese shar-pei is a unique breed. It has a wrinkled face, which makes it look as though it is permanently confused or worried. As the saying goes, though, looks can be deceiving.

This breed tends to bond deeply with its family, so much so that those who are allergic tend to find homes for this dog rather than give it up.

It has an independent streak and enjoys being given challenging tasks and puzzles to solve.

It likes spending plenty of time outdoors but doesn’t need loads of exercise once it reaches adulthood.

The chinese shar pei can range from 16 inches tall at the shoulder and 35 pounds or more.

These dogs can be challenging to train and housebreak, so patience is important when working with them.

The chinese shar pei has a life expectancy of 10-14 years.

Yes, Chinese Shar-Pei dogs are good dogs . They love their owners fiercely and will protect you at all costs, but will only accept the same level of affection from you in return. This breed is not for everyone. If you want a dog that’s easy to train or one that doesn’t need a lot of attention, then this isn’t the dog for you.

However, if you’re looking for an extremely loyal animal who will work with your schedule – no matter how busy – then this could be your best option.

Shar-pei – What’s to Love and What’s Not to Love

The Shar Pei is a gorgeous breed known for its signature wrinkles, powerful physique and adorable expression.   With all of the love this breed gets, though, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into before bringing one home.

Shar-pei have big personalities in small bodies, so don’t be surprised when they become your best friend within days!

Listed below are five things that will help you decide if this dog is right for you, along with some pros and cons to keep in mind.

Things You’ll Love About Shar-Pei

  • Their Playfulness – Even though they look tough on the outside, these dogs are actually quite playful on the inside! They love chasing after balls and toys and enjoy games like tug-of-war. If you’re looking for a dog that will happily play with you for hours on end, they’ll be the perfect choice.
  • Their Loyalty – Shar Pei are extremely loyal to their owners and families, often resulting in quite a few issues around strangers. Strangers can intimidate them, which can lead to some pretty scary situations!
  • It’s important to socialize your shar pei from an early age so that it knows how to behave with others. They WANT to see everyone as a friend but need proper guidance on how NOT to do so!
  • Their Easygoing Temperaments – This breed tends not to show much aggression or anxiety which is great if you have kids or other pets. They love to romp and play, so they’ll be a perfect match for homes with kids who want to get involved!
  • Their Ability to Live Indoors – Shar Pei can adapt to living outside in warmer climates but prefer the comforts of home with their families.

Chinese Shar-Pei dogs are healthy animals, but they do have some issues. These include:

  • They Need a Lot of Attention – If you’re someone who doesn’t like to give their dog lots of attention, then this is not the breed for you! A Shar-pei will become depressed and/or destructive if left alone for too long without some sort of mental stimulation (e.g., playing games or training).
  • Their Stubbornness – Just like we mentioned above, Chinese Shar-Pei dogs can be very stubborn at times. Many owners have noted that their dogs would do anything to avoid training sessions! This comes down to the owner’s patience more than anything else though, so don’t worry about it unless your dog isn’t willing to listen no matter how much time and effort you put
  • Most of these problems come from the wrinkled skin, which can make it harder for them to regulate their body temperature in certain climates. It’s also easy for a Chinese Shar Pei dog to suffer from heatstroke in extremely hot weather.
